Some centenarians who found the 100-year-old secret

You may be surprised to know that centenarians are not found equally in all parts of the world. Instead there are communities around the world which have many more individuals who are over 100 years of age.

In 1975, Morley Safer visited the lush valleys of Abkhazia where residents routinely lived to 100 – without giving up wine, meat, or cigarettes.

As a result, Safer suggested some life lessons on the best way to “keep young:”

  • Food from the earth, not from a can.
  • Hard physical labor, not the so-called leisure years.
  • Above all, an unbreakable belief in family life that makes age more important than youth or wealth — and old age the most important time of life.

More recently, a CBS 60 Minutes colleague, Lesley Stahl, visited a retirement community, which used to be called Leisure World 45 miles south of Los Angeles. It’s now its own city: Laguna Woods. The residents there are also enjoying very long lives for many of the same reasons.

Dan Buettner and his team have been studying the world’s “Blue Zones,” communities whose elders live with vim and vigor to record-setting ages.  These include Nuoro province in the island of Sardinia, the archipelago of Okinawa and a community of Seventh-Day Adventists concentrated in and around Loma Linda, California.

You can see what he found in the following video, where he shares the 9 common diet and lifestyle habits that keep them all spry past age 100.
