Cravings are a huge problem for a lot of people who are trying to lose weight. In fact it’s extremely uncommon to find someone who hasn’t suffered from cravings at one point or another when they have been dieting.
But Why Are Cravings Such An Issue?
The reason why cravings are such a big issue when losing weight is because the body knows that you are losing weight, and becoming leaner, so it’s immediate response is to do whatever it can to make you eat something. This reaction from the body causes a lot of people to slip up on their diets and to give into their cravings. What makes this situation worse is that the closer you are to completing your weight loss goals, the more intense, and difficult to resist, the cravings will be.
But not to fear, there are lots of things that can be done to conquer and control your cravings. If you’re on a diet and are finding it tough to resist the temptation of your cravings you should try these 5 tried and tested methods to eradicate your cravings.
Whenever you feel your temptation kicking in the last thing you want to be doing is just constantly thinking about it. This will intensify your cravings and significantly increase the chance of giving in. Instead, every time you get a craving you should do something else in order to take your mind off it. A few great ideas include going for a walk, listening to some music, getting on with a task that you need to complete. Just do whatever works best to distract you from your cravings.
Grab Some Gum Or Brush Your Teeth
This advice may sound a little odd, but it really does work to conquer cravings. The reason why chewing gum or brushing your teeth works extremely well is because the minty fresh feel that they give you, deters you from wanting to ruin it by succumbing to your cravings. So, next time you start to crave, try either of these suggestions out—you will be amazed at the results.
Eat a Healthy Alternative
No matter what your specific craving is, it is guaranteed that there is a healthy alternative to it. You may be able to purchase a healthy alternative pre-made from a shop, or you may have to find a recipe and make it yourself. Either way just do a little research to make sure that it really is a healthy alternative and give it a go. Also just remember that just because it’s a healthy alternative it doesn’t mean you can have it all the time, you still have to stick to your normal diet as much as possible in order to get the best results.
Destroy Your Temptation
If the thing that you are craving is already in your kitchen cupboard, or you have just been out and purchased it, a great way to get over it is to destroy it. This doesn’t mean just putting it in the bin, or hiding it in the back of the cupboard, it means actually destroying it. A great way to do this is by either crushing the item or running water over it. Just makes sure that it is totally destroyed, the satisfaction that you will get out over this will be wonderful.
Treat Yourself Once In A While
This is probably the last piece of advice you expected to see as how would treating yourself to the craving, work to control it? Shouldn’t cravings just be avoided altogether? The short answer is no. Sometimes it is a much better option to treat yourself every once in a while instead of trying to avoid it. This is because if a craving is avoided altogether, it may just keep getting more and more powerful until you just give in and binge on it. Because of this it is always better to treat yourself every once in a little while.
Whether you’re trying to lose weight on a low-carb, high protein, or three day juice cleanse diet, unfortunately cravings are always going to be a problem. However, cravings are far from impossible to overcome. If you adhere to these 5 tried and tested ways you will easily conquer and control any cravings that you may have.
