Are you suffering from high cholesterol? Before eating anything is your first thought about its effect on your cholesterol levels? How about eating a salmon filet for dinner tonight, or grabbing a handful of nuts or even better tasting that dark chocolate. Yes, a person with high cholesterol can enjoy all of these guilt-free! These foods and many more help in keeping your cholesterol level in control. All you need to do is make sure you eat the right healthy foods.

Here is a list of 9 foods which can help you in fighting a high cholesterol level:

  1. Grab some Nuts: Fats are not always bad; our body needs some healthy fats for proper functioning. Fats like Mono-unsaturated fats, poly-saturated fats and saturated fats are good for your health. Nuts provide you good amounts of all these healthy fats.
  2. Eat Oats: If you don’t like doctors prescribing boiled food for your breakfast then try having Oats, which can help a lot in keeping your cholesterol in control. Take two servings of oats in a day to lower LCL cholesterol by 5.3% in 6 weeks.
  3. Sip on that Red Wine: Yes raise a toast to your health with a glass of red wine. The red grapes used in producing red wine help to lower cholesterol levels. Just two glasses of red wine in a week are enough to do the trick.
  4. Green Beans: Green vegetables are essential to a healthy life. So just add beans to your diet and get those cholesterol levels down by 8%.
  5. Sinful Chocolates: Chocolates have cholesterol reducing antioxidants in them. Studies  have proved that dark chocolate can prevent blood vessels under pressure from rupturing.
  6. Eat Spinach. It’s not just for Popeye: you can also build your muscle power with spinach. It is proven that spinach contains around 13 falconoid elements which keep you away from harmful diseases like cancer, heart diseases and many more.
  7. Salmon and Fatty Fish: Salmon and sardines can be a healthy choice for you. They  keep your heart safe from conditions like heart attacks and strokes, and also keep cholesterol levels under control.
  8. Drink Tea: Tea is preferable to coffee, as tea has antioxidants in it and a lower amount of caffeine. Your bones become strong due to the presence of phytochemicals in tea. It also helps in increasing your body’s defense mechanism against LDL cholesterol levels.
  9. Use Olive oil: This is the best known item for cholesterol patients. Use olive oil instead of normal cooking oil in eating. It has many health benefits and does help in lowering bad cholesterol levels in the body.

In summary, add any of these foods in your daily diet, enjoy a healthier life and watch those cholesterol levels fall.

  1. The saying goes “High in Fiber, Low in Cholesterol”. We see often see seniors miss the opportunity to have the fiber they need at breakfast. Many of them actually add fiber via supplements. Most seniors do a good job of not eating junk food as they often are limited to staple foods via their budget or their care givers. Mathea RD/LD
